Australian Student Visa 500
Student visa advice should connect study purpose, evidence and future plans
A student visa strategy should address course choice, finances, genuine study evidence, English, health cover and future visa planning.
Decision points
- Course and provider choice
- Financial and genuine study evidence
- Future graduate or skilled pathway
Student visa advice now uses Genuine Student settings
Student visa planning should be based on the subclass 500 framework, the course and provider, Confirmation of Enrolment, English and financial evidence, health cover and the applicant’s overall study history and visa position.
For student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024, Home Affairs applies the Genuine Student requirement. Applicants should be ready to explain why the course, provider and study plan make sense and support those answers with evidence.
Overseas Student Health Cover is not just a formality. Home Affairs says OSHC expiry can affect the student visa end date, and at minimum OSHC must cover the course length. Work rights should be checked against the actual visa conditions in the grant letter or VEVO.
Key points
- Use current subclass 500 and Genuine Student language.
- Plan OSHC for the course and any extra stay period sought.
- Check work conditions rather than relying on old hour limits.
